The Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) belongs to the „Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V. (FVB)“. The FVB is an institution of seven natural sciences research institutes in Berlin funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the association of its federal states. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association. The Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) is a non-university academic research organisation dedicated to basic biomedical research and is located at the Research Campus Berlin-Buch in close vicinity to the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine and the Charité Experimental and Clinical Research Center.

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

(Ref. 08/2023)

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and initially limited to 2 years with the potential for extension.

Project description:

The application of light-sensitive proteins has revolutionized the neurosciences since 2005. Thus far, the primary players in this field have been light-gated ion channels that facilitate the transport of ions across membranes. Recently, however, enzyme rhodopsins have been discovered, which bear great potential for optogenetic applications. They can be used to optically trigger cGMP-dependent signaling processes and/or open cGMP-gated ion channels in different cell types. This project aims to understand ion permeation and selectivity in channelrhodopsins, as well as the far-red shifted light sensitivity in the newly discovered enzyme rhodopsins. To achieve this, we will employ computational approaches, such as molecular dynamics simulations, quantum-mechanics/molecular mechanics simulations and/or machine learning based methods. This project is a part of a joint project within the UniSysCat Excellence Cluster. The recruited researcher will have an excellent opportunity to work with collaborators who employ electrophysiology, structural biology, and time-resolved spectroscopy.

Requirements

We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious, and talented young scientist to join our enthusiastic and collaborative team in an outstanding scientific environment for performing research. The successful candidates should have a PhD in bioinformatics, biophysics, or chemistry and experience in molecular dynamics simulations and/or quantum-mechanics/molecular mechanics simulations. Candidates with experience in developing and applying machine learning methods are also strongly encouraged to apply.

We offer:

·         An attractive environment in a pleasant, friendly working atmosphere with an excellent infrastructure

·         Employment with all benefits of the public service

·         Continuing education and training

·         Family service

Salaries will be based on TVöD. In 2013 the institute was awarded the certificate of the audit Beruf und Familie as a family-friendly employer. We offer equal opportunities regardless of gender and welcome applications of disabled candidates. They will be preferred in case of equal qualification. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.
